A little holiday riddle

What do you call the Sunday between Christmas and New Year's Day?

Well, we called it our last missions service of 2014 :)
OK, I promise not to quit my day job.

Anyway, we celebrated it yesterday with Pastor Keith Williams at Southwood Assembly of God in Indianapolis.

We enjoyed sharing ministry and missions with Pastor Keith and the good people at Southwood Assembly.

If you are looking for a church home in Indianapolis ...

... Pastor Keith would love to see you at Southwood Assembly!

Stuart and I hope to return to Mexico City in the next few months. But we need generous people like you to partner with us to proclaim release to the captives of drug addiction and to set at liberty those who are oppressed by the sex trade. Please consider a one-time gift or recurring monthly commitment today.

We can make a difference together!

Taking a trek to the StoreHouse

We may not trek by starlight or on camelback, but itineration travel can be grueling at times. However, catching up with old friends definitely make those (seemingly endless) miles worth it.

Such was the case this weekend when we caught up with Pastor Troy and Teresa Trout at The StoreHouse in Greencastle. We met years (and years) ago in Fort Wayne while serving at our respective churches and before we all went to the mission field.

Thank you, Troy and Teresa for your warm hospitality, delicious food, lively conversation, and generous spirit. And many thanks to The StoreHouse as well for a wonderful weekend and the beautiful gift basket!
You are a blessing.

The itineration finish line is closer now than ever before, but we need some financial energy packs to help us reach our goal :) If you would like to get some tax-deductible giving in before the end of the year, please consider a one-time gift or recurring monthly commitment today.

We need generous people like you to partner with us to proclaim release to the captives of drug addiction and to set at liberty those who are oppressed by the sex trade. We can make a difference together!

May God bless you with discomfort

May God bless you with discomfort at easy answers, half-truths, and superficial relationships, so that you may live deep within your hearts.
May God bless you with anger at injustice, oppression, and exploitation of people, so that you may work for justice, freedom, and peace.
May God bless you with tears to shed for those who suffer pain, rejection, hunger, and war, so that you may reach out your hand to comfort them and turn their pain into joy.
May God bless you with enough foolishness to believe that you can make a difference in the world, so that you can do what others claim cannot be done.
Amen

There's no place like home

Stuart and I shared three services with Pastor Ron and Joy Hawkins and our church family at Fort Wayne First Assembly, this weekend.

Stuart and I have called First Assembly home since 1997. We had the privilege of serving as youth leaders, Adult Bible Fellowship teachers, home group leaders, and missions committee members. Prior to our missionary appointment, Stuart was the property manager at the Coliseum Blvd location and I also worked part-time as a receptionist and graphic designer.

However, nothing beats sharing our heart and ministry with a church who has loved and supported us from the very beginning. Thank you, Pastor Ron, Missions Director Marilyn Tolbert, and everyone at Fort Wayne First Assembly.
You made our day!

Yesterday, also happened to be BGMC Sunday. All these coins will help fund feeding programs, water wells, curriculum and other critical needs around the globe. On behalf of all Assemblies of God missionaries who rely on such support, we thank you

Stuart and I hope to return to Mexico City in a few months. But we need generous people like you to partner with us to proclaim release to the captives of drug addiction and to set at liberty those who are oppressed by the sex trade. Please consider a one-time gift or recurring monthly commitment today.

A creek that flows with the love of God

According to their mission statement, Eagle Creek Assembly of God serves as an international fellowship of Christians who love God by leading others into His love

Stuart and I shared ministry with Pastor Greg and Vicky Gentry yesterday in Indianapolis and we can attest that Eagle Creek Assembly flows with the love of God for each other and their community.

First, Stuart and I spent the Sunday school hour impressing the Hispanic class with our Spanglish :) Thanks for your kind comments and questions. Also, our sincere appreciation goes out to Pastora Madeline Nuñez. Your love for missions and your home country of El Salvador touched our hearts.
We'll be praying with you!

Again, many thanks to Pastor Gentry and Eagle Creek Assembly for your generosity and partnership in missions all these years. Dios les bendiga!

Opening the Door

my advent endeavor

Years ago, I gave my parents a beautifully illustrated Advent book. Every page features a door you can open to reveal a scene from the Christmas story. In fact, all through my childhood we enjoyed a variety of Advent calendars that counted down the days until the birth of Christ. Sometimes, my mom would buy one of the more elaborate calendars that sweetened the anticipation with a piece of chocolate. Each year, I still purchase an Advent calendar, and with childlike anticipation I (or one of my kids) open a door to each day's secret surprise.

Recently, at my request, a friend opened up her heart and revealed to me a precious part of her soul; the secret behind her life-affirming personality and positive attitude. I've been contemplating her gracious response ever since, but one idea in particular has captivated my attention. Every day my friend makes a choice, especially in the face of challenging circumstances or difficult relationships, to open the door to grace.

So I've been wondering, as I open the doors on my Advent calendar this season, how can I purposefully open the door to grace for the people in my life?

Perhaps ...

I can give you the benefit of the doubtI don't have to automatically assume the worst about you. Maybe you're having a bad day or someone you love is ill or you just lost your job. You don't owe me an explanation. Today, I will open the door to grace and give you the benefit of the doubt.

I can offer my opinions without framing them as factsAs much as I like to believe I adhere to considerably logical opinions, I still need to frame them honestly. Although, I may have a right to my opinion, I do not have a right to express them haphazardly. Therefore, I will open the door to grace and buffer my thoughts with, “In my opinion.”

I can really listen to youI can consider thoughtfully what you are actually saying. I won't pretend like I'm listening just so I can make a defense. I will wait my turn and not interrupt. I can understand and respect your ideas even if they differ with mine. Today, I will open the door to grace and give you my full attention.

I can give you a compliment without making a negative comparison“I love your creative use of vibrant, expressive colors. I feel so alive when I view your art,” is a great compliment. “You are so much better than that other guy who dabbles in depressing themes. He needs art lessons or counseling or something,” is not. Therefore, I will open the door to grace by building you up without pulling someone else down.

I can look you in the eye and express something positive or encouragingEven if I don't know you. I can choose to say, “Thanks for your time,” “I appreciate your effort,” “I loved how you expressed yourself,” “That's a great question,” “I'm so glad you told me that,” or “You are worth it,” depending on the situation. Today, I will open the door to grace by responding with positive affirmations or encouraging words.

The season of Advent reminds us that with the birth of Christ, God opened the door to grace for usPerhaps, then we can open the door to grace for each other as well.

Like coming home

Stuart began his walk of discipleship at New Life Assembly in Beaufort, SC. This week we visited New Life Assembly of God in Noblesville, IN and it felt like home for him.

Actually, we both felt a connection as Pastor Damian and Shawna Schoonmaker are from New England, like I am, and pastored in Bristol, Connecticut, not too far from my hometown.

After our ministry time, we talked over lunch about our mutual cross-cultural ministry experiences, all things Italian, and seafood :) Thanks, Pastor Damian, Shawna, and the New Life family! May the Lord reward your faithfulness and missions-loving heart.

Lunch with Fred and Wilma

No, not these guys.

Yesterday, we shared life and ministry with Pastor Jeremy and Trish Eisele at Journey Church in Granger, Indiana.

Afterward, we enjoyed a delicious lunch at Kowloon Bay Chinese restaurant with the Eisele family, (the original) Fred and Wilma, and their friend, Bruce. I'm so sorry I missed my photo-op with Fred and Wilma Smith, but congratulations go out to them as they recently celebrated 60 years of marriage!

As we try to wind-down our time of itineration, we'd like to thank all the pastors, missions directors, and churches who make our time in the States worthwhile. You have opened up your hearts, your calendars, and your service times to us in an effort to open up the heart of missions to your people. This means a lot to us. Thanks so much for welcoming us into your families. Your people have been generous and kind toward us week after week. We appreciate you taking the journey with us to preach the gospel to the ends of the earth.

Un millón de gracias!

Feeling Grateful

A word of encouragement flows from an unencumbered heart and is truly a gift from God.

Thank you, Pastor Brian and Melody Whidden, and Elkhart Calvary Assembly for your support and friendship this past weekend. While Stuart talked with Pastor Brian earlier in the week, our one service scheduled unexpectedly turned into two when he invited us to share in their Hispanic congregation on Sunday evening.

So thankful that the Spanish flowed fairly well as I preached. Again, thank you for the opportunity and your kind words of encouragement after the service. After a 16 month hiatus of preaching in Spanish, that was no small miracle :)

Also, thank you, Pastor Brian and Melody for lunch (Mexican), great conversation, and a place to watch football (Stuart) and to rest (Wendy) between services.

Muchísimas gracias!

Navigating the River together

We loved connecting with Pastor Michael Dubbels and the great people of River of Life Church in Lebanon, Indiana, yesterday.

Stuart shared his testimony and I preached on the compassion and hope of Christ that motivates us to reach out and the Spirit of Pentecost that empowers us to make disciples.

Thank you, River of Life and Pastor Michael for your heartfelt feedback, the great conversation at lunch, and your partnership in sharing the gospel in Mexico City.

Also, big thanks to Follower musician Dean Rebhorn for their award winning New Again CD. Great listening material for the drive home!

It's a shame

In John 8, there's a face-off between the religious men and Jesus. Read my newest post on Tortilla Press and consider the damage of using shaming tactics like the religious men in the story verses the redemptive process modeled by Jesus.

Season of Giving

Speed the Light (STL) is the student-initiated, volunteer, charitable program that provides essential transportation and creative communication equipment to missionaries across the nation and in over 180 countries around the world. Stuart and I have benefited from a STL vehicle both in Jamaica and Mexico City through the generosity of the Indiana District Youth.

View from our STL vehicle in Mexico City

Now, Influence Music is offering a wonderful opportunity to give to Speed the Light and incorporate some great worship music into your life.

From October 19th through December 31st, Influence Music would like to partner with you during a special Season of Giving where all proceeds from the sales of these three albums will go to equip missionaries with the transportation and communications equipment they need ...  [to share] the light of the Gospel ...

Influence Music is all about shaping culture by inspiring us to worship not only with our hearts, but also with our actions. So join with Influence Music and take a stand for spiritual freedom.

Buy an album for yourself, or as a gift, and help bring hope, life, and light into the darkness.

Collaborating with cross-cultural servants, Connecting with the community of faith, and Running to Paris

Holistic Mission means integrating faith and practice. We must recognize the importance of the people to whom we minister being a part of the process of their own redemption and finding solutions to their problems. Bill Prevette, PhD research tutor at the Oxford Centre for Mission Studies

We began our week at Fort Wayne First Assembly addressing the issue of how to do short-term missions trips that affirm the dignity and self-worth of people as well as how to collaborate with the missionary to empower the local church to build community in the foreign context (because missions is less about what we do to somebody and more about how we work and minister together).

Wednesday, prior to sharing our hearts at Indianapolis Dayspring Church we shared dinner and lively conversation with Pastor Brian and Melissa Nicholson. The more Stuart and Brian talked, the more they began to realize they could have been separated at birth as their stories and testimonies were so similar :)

Thursday, we enjoyed the privilege of listening to a very articulate and poised young woman we have had the honor of knowing most of her life. Lyndsie Williams is "Running to Paris" to be a part of The Bridge International Church, a place where university students and young professions meet to pray and learn about how to apply God's Word to their lives. Contact Lyndsie at lyndsie@thebridgeparis.com and invite her to share at your next gathering.

Yesterday, we joined Pastor Rod Murray and the community of faith at Wellspring Church in Henderson, KY for a truly moving service. If you live in the area and are seeking a faith-based community, head over to Wellspring Church on US 41 behind the Audubon Chrysler dealership and conveniently located next to the Bingo hall :)
You'll be glad you did.

A 3-hour drive and a change of time zones did not prevent us from getting to Current Church with Gene and Paula Feasel last evening in Franklin, IN. We've known Gene and Paula since the time we all served as youth pastors in northeast Indiana (many moons ago). We enjoyed rocking out with them during service and sharing a more subdued meal afterward :)

Compassion and Missions: a match made in heaven

When compassion is integral to our mission, people see a disarming glimpse of a loving, present, seeking God. Dr Beth Grant

Last week, I had the privilege of attending this year's AGWM Compassion Forum in Springfield, MO. My heart is bursting and my mind is still processing all the pertinent information shared and relevant topics discussed.

AGWM's Compassion Link hosts a variety resources like online journals, webcasts, and weblinks to give a theological basis for the integration of compassion ministries in our mission and best practice principles. Check it out!

Of course, I also enjoyed the added bonus of seeing my kids and eating a great dinner at That Lebanese Place :)

As the director of this Fellowship's overseas efforts, I want the world to know that the reason we do these [acts of compassion] is because Jesus Christ did them. The reason we love people is because Jesus Christ loved them. We have no other motive than that.
J. Philip Hogan, former Executive Director of AGWM

Sunday morning, I and a host of other missionaries celebrated missions at Fort Wayne First Assembly. Then Stuart and I attended a small group last evening to share about Motivation, Ministry, and God's Challenge to Mission. Tonight we will be a part of a Missions Team Dinner for anyone interested in learning more about ... well you know ... missions teams.

While I attended Fort Wayne First Assembly yesterday morning, Stuart traveled to New Life Assembly of God  in South Bend to minister with Pastor Ron and Kristy Gorsuch.
Thank you, New Life, for your support!

It's a jungle out there!

At least it was in Muncie this past weekend when we spoke at Northside Assembly of God during their missions convention!

Deep in the Northside jungle, we shared the gospel among all kinds of wildlife :)

Apparently though the turtle and fish had quite the adventure that night when their pond sprung a leak. Word has it the turtle survived the field trip, but the fish may not have been so lucky.

After meeting with the teens, the adventurous young adults enjoyed a buffet of missionary food, including octopus, seaweed, pig's feet and other delicacies.

Stuart & I had a wonderful weekend with lead pastor Carl & Diane Bowden as well as youth pastor Casey, and children's pastors Stephen & Elizabeth. Thanks so much for your heartfelt prayers and generous support!

You too can partner with us to proclaim release to the captive of drug addiction and to set at liberty those who are oppressed by the sex trade. Let's make a difference together!

A full week of miles and smiles

Feels like we spent a lot of time due north as well as in the northwest part of our state this week.

Last Monday we enjoyed a marvelous time of prayer at the Christian Celebration Center in Midland, MI before meeting with the Latin America/Caribbean missions council and team members.

The evening began with a time of worship, a faith declaration, and then prayer for every supported missionary and the various regions of the world.

Look! They support our former neighbors and missionary colleagues Randy and Linda Lindsey!

On Tuesday, Stuart dropped me off in Fort Wayne and then headed down to Princeton, IN for the Southern Area Ministers Meeting. He arrived home late on Tuesday, rested up on Wednesday, and then we found ourselves in Merrillville once again on Thursday.

We stayed at the home of Christian and Cristina Pellegrini-Rath. A native of Tuscani, Cristina served a meal to die for :) After an update with missions committee members Tedd and Lexa, we spent a better part of the evening talking food and missions. Which come to think of it, is usually the topic of conversation whenever cross-cultural servants get together!

The following day, Stuart and I participated in a missions update and thank you video before speaking at the Oasis luncheon at Living Hope Church
What a fun group of people!

So thankful to Beverly (Oasis pastor), Cristina (phenomenal hostess), Living Hope Church, Pastor Todd Matchett and the missions committee for a great couple of days and their faithful support all these years.

On Saturday, Stuart shared breakfast with Pastor Bob Monroe and the men of Kendallville Assembly of God. Unfortunately, Stuart is out of town today and with him the photos he took of the event :) I'll put them up when he gets back.

Yesterday, we headed down to Diversity Church in Indianapolis with Pastor Jonathan and Nicole Ember. We are thankful for their support and vision for their community and the world. If you're in their neck of the woods next week, be sure to stop by Garfield Park Art Center for a Taste of Diversity. Looks like a lot of fun!
